Rik Logtenberg on Jan 08, 2010

With opportunities abounding in renewable power and energy efficiency, traditional IT companies are making some rather aggressive moves into this market. This week, Google announced that it will launch its own utility, while Yahoo has found a source of funds for a new data center: the Department of Energy.

10 Steps to becoming a Twitter Master

Rik Logtenberg

Rik Logtenberg on Sep 30, 2009

Let’s face it, most people think twitter is a gimmick. It’s easy to set up an account and easy to start posting. Sadly, most people stop there. Many of my clients post a few tweets, get a few followers and then become frustrated at the amount of time they spend composing elegant messages for a tiny audience. It just doesn’t seem worth it.

But if you persevere, Twitter can become a powerful and time-saving tool for staying connected with your friends and promoting your business.

Here then are my 10 easy steps to becoming a twitter master:

Step 1: Create multiple twitter accounts for each business in addition to your personal account

If you’re like me, you have a couple of businesses going on. I’m a consultant, a web designer, and a partner in a yoga training company (no joke). Since each company has a unique client base and who are clearly interested in different things, I set up a blog and twitter feed for each company. By creating separate twitter accounts I can focus on giving my followers things they’ll find interesting.

New Google Search Algorithm will speed search and improve accuracy

Rik Logtenberg

Rik Logtenberg on Aug 12, 2009

Google has lifted the lid on its updated search engine, which developers have nicknamed “Caffeine”.

Although still in the testing phase, the firm says it is the “first step in improving the speed, accuracy and comprehensiveness of search results”.

The new engine will replace Google’s current one after tests are complete.

Martin McNulty of search marketing specialist Trafficbroker said the upgrade threatened to put Microsoft’s new engine, Bing, “in the shade”.

“Google have let Caffeine quietly slip out. It talked about vertical specific searches while quietly doubling the speed and starts introducing real-time results and news feeds,” he said.

Skype Call Recording: The easiest way to podcast

Rik Logtenberg

Rik Logtenberg on Mar 25, 2009

Podcasting is my favorite medium, but up until today, just thinking about making my own podcast was too much.  Sure, I’ve been recommending to clients that a podcast is as a great way to get into people’s ears, but I’ve never felt that I had the time to plan topics, record and edit the audio, and then upload it into a format that works as a podcast. Those days may be over. Here is what I think is the easiest way to record a podcast.

First, the Technology

  1. Sype Call Recorder for the Mac does what it says, it records audio from skype calls. It is easy to install and really easy to use. I tested with a call to Sonja’s cellphone and the quality came out great. The only downside is that the audio is recorded as an .mov file, so we’ll need to convert it to .mp3 (using something like Audacity) before we upload it to our CMS for inclusion in the podcast. We’ll probably want to add an intro or extro as well, but I’d be happy to make it live just as it is. The Skype Call Recorder for Mac is $14.95.
  2. For the PC I found a few different kinds of Skype Recording software. I haven’t test any of them, but, based on reviews, the best appears to be the Pretty May Call Recorder. This program records in mp3 so it’s podcast-ready. It’s $24.95 and you can download a trial here.

Second, the Style

Possibly my favorite radio show ever is called Wiretap, which plays on CBC in Canada and NPR in the US. It’s a built on a simple concept:  the host, Jonathan Goldstein, calls random friends or people about random things (like trying to find somebody to watch his cat) and records the call. What ends up emerging are compelling stories about life and friendship. Amidst the mundane talk comes something funny, sometimes dramatic, often universal, and always real. The sound quality isn’t perfect but that only adds to the show’s appeal - it feels more real.

I think this style of show - people calling each and recording the conversation is the future of podcasting.

Google Calendar - Brilliant

Rik Logtenberg

Rik Logtenberg on May 02, 2006

With the launch of it’s new calendar service, Google has shown once again that it is the world’s leading developer of web-based applications.

Google Calendar is an incredibly useful tool that uses the iCal protocol first developed by Apple to allow users to create and share their calendars. Because it can display and publish iCal and XML feeds, sharing and collaboration are easier than ever.

Google Calendar also integrates seamlessly with gmail which means that not only is Microsoft Outlook in trouble, but Google has served notice that desktop productivity and office applications will soon be obsolete.

If you’re not using Mozilla Firefox, you should be (unless you’re running a Mac). One of Firefox’s best features is its ability to utilize “Extensions”. Extensions are little programs that make the browser do extra little things. Visit mozilla to learn more and get some of your own.
